“Fantastic views.”
by Susie
A journey of adventure in Sri Lanka that includes a unique mix of nature lodges, heritage hotels, tented camps and superior guesthouses.
Relax upon arrival at the beach resort of Negombo – a favourite with independent travellers. The adventure begins the next day at Kithulgala where you visit lush rainforests with a local guide and a program of White Water Rafting or Canyoning down crystal clear streams. Kithulgala is one of the best locations in the world for rafting as the rapids are easy to navigate and are suitable for complete beginners. Between December – April a trek to the summit of Adam’s Peak is included. Assuming you are reasonably fit, the sacred mountain can be easily climbed in 4 hours for an awe inspiring, mystical sunrise that is one of the world’s great ‘once in a lifetime’ experiences.
A breathtaking journey through the Hill Country to Ella is one of the ‘Great Railway Journeys Of The World’. Stay overnight at the Ella Gap and wake up to the prettiest view in the whole of Sri Lanka!
The jungles of Yala National Park contain Sri Lanka’s famous Leopards, Sloth Bears and Crocodiles, and is one of Asia’s premier game reserves. Joes Bungalow is located in the forest near the entrance and gives you a truly authentic safari experience.
You can easily add a beach stay in the Deep South of Sri Lanka to make this a very special 2 week holiday adventure in the island.

Set in a pretty riverside location, this is home to about 70 Elephants- the largest group of orphaned Elephants in the world! Most have been found injured or abandoned in the wild. Baby calves, some only a few weeks old are fed by bottle and the whole herd is then bathed in the adjoining river. A tour highlight for many visitors to Sri Lanka.

Ascent Of Adams Peak
(December-April)
You need to start the ascent at about 2 am in the morning for an overnight trek to the summit of Adams Peak (7415ft) to reach the top in time for sunrise. During the ‘season’ the path to the summit is well lit and large crowds of people make their way to the summit, especially during weekends and Full Moon days. Stalls sell refreshments along the way.
This is probably the most magnificent experience anyone can have in the whole of Sri Lanka. You feel an almost spiritual, ‘On Top Of The World’ feeling with amazing sights of swirling clouds rising from the valleys below as the first rays of sunlight hit the peak around 6 am.

Encounters With Leopards And Wild Elephants At Yala
The jewel among Sri Lanka’s wildlife reserves and one of Asia’s premier sanctuaries is justifiably famous for its population of Leopards that can easily be observed hunting and lazing around during daylight hours. The island’s big cat is attracted by the presence of large herds of Spotted Deer, Sambar (Elk) and Wild Boar that comprise its staple diet.
Apart from the wildlife, the stunning landscapes at Yala consist of strange shaped rock outcrops that are the ideal habitat of the aggressive Sloth Bear and a coastline dotted with beautiful lagoons harbouring migratory flamingoes and ferocious Marsh Crocodiles.
Around 100 Elephants are also found in and around the park. Today there are said to be 18 to 20 ‘tuskers’ in the reserve, including some huge ‘cross-tuskers’.
